Various Drain Problems That Require Prompt Repair

pipecorrosionCommercial drain problems are a terrible thing to deal with, and they only get worse the longer they are left alone. Though many commercial issues may start subtly, they can cause an immense amount of damage if they are not repaired as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may end up replacing the entire pipe much sooner than you otherwise would. Read on to find out more about the various drain problems that require immediate repair, before they endanger the entire pipe.

Depending on the material your drain pipes are made of, you may have to deal with one of several kinds of corrosion. Copper pipes, which are widely used in both commercial and residential buildings, are resistant to the rust that afflicts iron and steel. However, they are also susceptible to corrosion caused by chlorine and formaldehyde particles in the soil. These particles cause pitted and formicary corrosion, respectively, weakening the pipe and opening up leaks. This can cause incredible damage if the leaks are not discovered quickly enough.

Tree Root Intrusion

It may seem absurd to say that trees are a serious threat to your drain system, but they are. Tree root systems extend well beyond the visible part of the tree, and often find their way into water and sewer pipe nearby. One or two roots are not that big of a problem, and can be removed fairly easily if they’re caught early enough. If the root is allowed to grow and spread within the pipe, though, it can quickly reach the point where it can no longer be easily removed. In situations like those, it is often necessary to replace the pipe entirely.

Pipe Sagging

A common issue in areas with loose soil, pipe sagging, or “bellying” is the result of the ground shifting around the line. This can misalign the pipe, causing a low point in which waste can collect. This inhibits the flow of wastewater through the pipe, causing frequent backups. If the shift is great enough, especially over an extended period of time, the pipe can even crack. This kind of thing can certainly be repaired, in most cases, but it’s something that should be dealt with as quickly as possible. The longer a sagging pipe is left alone, the worse the problem is going to get.

Lime Scale Buildup

Hard water is an issue that affects millions of homes and businesses across the country, and impacts the entire plumbing system. Though most companies tend to focus on the problems hard water causes for the plumbing system, it can affect the drain and sewer system just as severely. Lime scale buildup from hard water exposure can restrict the flow of wastewater through the pipe. If it isn’t dealt with in a timely fashion, it can harden and become almost impossible to remove. This is why you need to have it taken care of as soon as it’s found.
