The grease trap is what prevents your sewer pipe from becoming clogged to the point of uselessness. Provided, of course, that you have it cleaned out on a regular basis. However, even a grease trap can’t protect your pipes all on its own. Let’s take a look at why it’s especially important to have your drains cleaned out during the winter season.

Most people pour these liquids down their drains when they’re done using them, not knowing that they’re causing a significant problem for their pipes in the process. FOG congeals as it cools, forming a semi-viscous substance that restricts the flow of water through the pipes. For commercial kitchens, the amount of FOG being poured down the pipes on a regular basis is exponentially higher. A grease trap will collect most of the FOG you put down the drain for later disposal. However, colder weather adds a new dimension to the problem of fog.


How liquid or viscous the FOG you pour down the drain is depends entirely on the temperature of the surrounding area. As the days get colder, the temperature in the sewer system will drop and cause the FOG inside to congeal faster. This means that FOG deposits will build up in the system faster than they otherwise would.
