Oil/Sand Interceptors in Washington, DC

When dealing with vehicle service facilities, vehicle washing facilities, or even just parking garages, it is not enough to ensure that there is sufficient drainage. You must be able to prevent certain materials, including oil and sediment, from making their way into the municipal wastewater system.

This can lead to environmental concerns, and it is your duty as the commercial property owner to do your part in preventing such issues. Oil/sand interceptors are in-ground tanks that are used to capture and trap dirt, sand, oils, and other substances that may result from certain practices, including the servicing and washing of vehicles, or even the storage of vehicles in a parking garage.

Since 1950, we have set the standard for commercial services in the greater Washington, DC area. Now in its 4th generation as a family owned business, Magnolia Commercial Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is ready to tackle your commercial needs. Call us for oil/sand interceptor service today!

How They Work

An inlet line allows liquids and their contents to enter the oil/sand interceptor. A baffle plate serves to diffuse the flow as it enters the interceptor, and the solids and sludge within that liquid are trapped inside. These materials are heavier than the water and will sink in the interceptor. Meanwhile, oil will float to the top of the liquid, and that too can be separated from the gray water, which can then be disposed of via the wastewater system. Needless to say, the accumulated sand, oil, and debris that your interceptor traps can start to cause pretty serious operational issues if it is not disposed of as needed.

When Are Oil/Sand Interceptors Required?

Oil/sand interceptors are commonly used in settings where vehicles are a constant presence.

  • Vehicle washing facilities require oil/sand interceptors, as they are constantly generating wastewater, and that wastewater will contain sand and grit that is washed off of the car, along with soaps and oils.
  • Vehicle service facilities are also going to need oil/sand interceptors. While you no doubt collect fluids as you change them out, there is naturally going to be some spillage to deal with.
  • Parking garages require oil/sand interceptors, as rainwater can loosen up dirt grit picked up from the road, and minor leaks may have gone unnoticed.

Schedule Your Oil/Sand Interceptor Pumping

Don’t let your oil/sand interceptor fill up to unacceptable levels. If your system is not pumped frequently enough, the solids that build up inside are going to take up too much space, and may potentially be siphoned through the outlet pipe, ultimately making their way to the wastewater system. You may be held liable for any violations. Our vacuum trucks and technicians are available. Call now for professional oil/sand interceptor pumping from Magnolia Commercial Plumbing, Heating & Cooling.
